Rep. Merritt co-authored House Bill 1034 which adds the words “under God” to the Texas pledge. It became effective on June 15, 2007.

Our new state pledge is:

“Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”

Rep. Merritt joined Winona ISD officials to kick off the UT Health Center’s Breath of Life Mobile Asthma Clinic.  The mobile clinic will visit rural school districts in East Texas to provide asthma screenings and treatment to children who need it most.  Regular follow up visits with be established to ensure continued, quality care.  The mobile unit will result in fewer admissions to hospitals and greatly improve the quality of life for children in East Texas.

Rep. Merritt visits with Veterans in Harlingen during a recent public hearing of the House Committee on Defense Affairs & State-Federal Relations.  Rep. Merritt and fellow committee members heard testimony on exploring coordination with community based clinics to enact the Veteran’s Mental Health Outreach and Access Act of 2007 and recommendations to implement the findings of the Veterans Disability Benefits Commission’s Inspector General Disability ratings report.
