Longview, Texas- Today, The Honorable Tommy Merritt announced that over 100 individuals in East Texas have donated to his campaign in less than a month. “I’d like to thank all contributors and look forward to continuing this momentum further into 2012. This is the first in a long line of victories for our community and our campaign. I was born and raised in East Texas and always worked hard in the Legislature to represent East Texas. I look forward to serving again.”
Merritt went on to say, “It’s incredibly encouraging that we’ve had such broad support right here at home in House District 7 in such a short time,” noting that the filing only reflected twenty five days of fundraising. “I was approached by citizens in our community and asked to run because people felt that the district was being serviced by a politician, and not being served by a Representative.”
Merritt’s involvement as a Republican in government began as a senior at Kilgore High School, when in 1964 he met Republican Barry Goldwater at the Gregg County Airport to support Goldwater’s presidential campaign. After gaining a great depth of knowledge in the private sector, Merritt turned his talents to local public service as a member of the Gregg County Appraisal Board.
In 1990, the first Republican Governor of Texas since Reconstruction, Bill Clements, appointed Merritt to the Sabine River Authority. In 1997, Tommy was sworn in as a member of the Texas House of Representatives to serve House District 7.
While in the Legislature, Representative Merritt served House District 7 from 1997-2010 and was the Chairman of both the House Committee on Public Safety and the House Committee on Energy Resources. Merritt has also served on the House Committees on Transportation, Redistricting, Select Federal Legislation, Local and Consent Calendars, Border and International Affairs, Defense Affairs & State-Federal Relations, and State Affairs.
